In the public sector, including the Town of Evans, there exists an entitlement mentality where public employees expect raises and more benefits every year no matter the state of the economy and without consideration of what taxpayers can afford.
If you attend town board meetings or read the supervisor’s column, you’ll more likely be informed by Fran Pordum about fish frys and chicken dinners than his goals for new employee contracts. Employee costs are the biggest cost to taxpayers. If you don’t control these costs, residents will be looking at never ending spending increases which means higher taxes. While Pordum will point out how his 2010 budget does not raise taxes, he does not explain how he’s paying for employee raises, the $180,000 pension payment hit and never ending increases in medical benefit costs. Profits from water sales disappear on April 1st when the Erie County Water Authority takes over the water department.
Increased costs and lost revenue do not add up to 0% increase budget.
Fran Pordum owes the taxpayers a truthful explanation of how he’s balancing the budget.
